Something to celebrate…

Last year we went from 9 Guides from before the summer to 19 Guides at the start of the school year.

One of the new Guides that evening managed to fall on a spaghetti tower while sitting down. We’re still not how she managed that but she ended up gouging her nose and eye on spaghetti. There was blood. There were tears.┬áParents were called (thankfully parents we knew fairly well).

The following week there was a twisted ankle.

And then there was a bloody tooth.

And then…well you get the idea. Suffice to say, Jo and I used our First Aid training more times that first┬áterm than we had in the four previous years I’d been with the unit.

And that doesn’t include the social drama of who was getting to be in a patrol with who as a whole crowd of friends joined at the same time.

So this year, we only had 5 new Guides (4 came tonight, 1 is joining us next week) and no one needed first aid. No one screamed or huffed and puffed about another Guide.

It might be a miracle.

We chose 4 Patrol leaders – one of them almost shed tears at the honour. We asked them who they’d like their Patrol seconds to be. We asked all the Guides to put on confidential pieces of paper their friend requests for patrols, in the hope that we can mix the girls up, separate the ones who will self-destruct or fight to the death if put together, but still ensure everyone has a friend they know in their group.

It may be that this first week has lulled us into a false sense of security and next week all hell will break loose. But I hope not. Here’s to another Guiding year!
